He was born in South Plainfield on February 19, 1931 and was a proud member of South Plainfield Born. Willard “Bill”, also known as Smitty, grew up and went to school in South Plainfield and attended North Plainfield High School. He served in the Navy during the Korean Conflict and was a volunteer fireman in South Plainfield and a member of the American Legion Post 0243. He was active in the South Plainfield Lions Club, Manasquan Elks Post 2534, VFW Post 1838 and the Sons of the Union Veterans of the Civil War. He owned and operated the successful D&S Construction Co. for many years before retiring to Manasquan. He lived with gusto, flying planes and building his homes in Manasquan and Islamorada, in the Florida Keys. He enjoyed the beach, cocktails, reading, and his daily trips to the diner with the Breakfast Club. Bill thoroughly enjoyed spending time with family and friends and will be sadly and greatly missed. Bill is survived by his beloved wife of 56 years Joan Wahl Smith of Manasquan; his dearly devoted children, daughter Laurie Joan McManus and her husband Jim of Absecon, NJ; son Douglas Wahl Smith and his wife Tina of Wall. NJ; daughter Alison Lee Shumway and her husband Shawn of Wall, NJ; grandchildren Margaret Joan McManus, Michael John McManus, Annie Laurie McManus and Samantha Rose Shumway. He is also survived by his sister Florence Smith Hunt and her husband Emery, as well as many cherished nieces and nephews. Arrangements are under the direction of Orender Family Home for Funerals, Manasquan. A memorial service will be held 11 am Friday January 20 at First Presbyterian Church of Manasquan, 16 Virginia Avenue, Manasquan, NJ. Burial will be private.
