Rahner, 89, of Manasquan passed away Friday, January 20th, at Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune. Born in Germany, he emigrated to the U.S. in 1927 and grew up in West Orange. Shortly after the attack on Pearl Harbor, he enlisted in the Navy and served in the Pacific. He was sent to the University of Michigan for officers training and after WWII he completed his degree at Rutgers College of Agriculture. In 1948, he met Cecilia Avon on a blind date. Their marriage would last over 62 years. Erwin joined the family business, Avon Knitting Mills in Fairview, NJ, where he was an owner and partner, retiring after 35 Years. Erwin loved water and snow skiing, tennis, and swimming. His musical exploits included playing the bass drum in the University of Michigan marching band, the accordian at family gatherings, and playing the spoons at any possible moment. He served as the president of the Lions Club in Cliffside Park, NJ, and voluntered his time as a coach for youth wrestling and Little League, was a pastoral assistant at the Jersey Shore Medical Center, and was active with AIDS support groups,. In his later years, he faithfully went to the gym until the last week of his life. Erwin was predeceased by a son Keith Rahner, a sister Ann Thomas, and a granddaughter Gretchen Therrien. He is survived by his loving wife, Cecilia (nee Avon) Rahner of Manasquan; a daughter Suzanne and her husband Alan Therrien of Boston, MA; four sons and their spouses: David and Patricia Rahner of Cincinnati, OH, Douglas and Ellen Rahner of Homer, NY, Richard and Lindsay Rahmun of Corvallis, Oregon, and Thomas Rahner of Wall, NJ. Erwin is also survived by 17 cherished grandchildren: Michele, Paloma, Madeleine, Chloe, Sarrina, Elizabeth, Lucy, Clare, Meghan, James, Kristen, Paul, Joseph, Anna, Emma, Mia, and Charles; and 2 great grandsons: Daniel and Andrew. Relatives and friends are invited to call Monday, January 23, from 3-7 pm at Orender Family Home for Funerals, 2643 Old Bridge Road, Manasquan. A funeral service will be held Monday evening at 6 pm.
